Harvest is one of the most important times of the year for our rural communities, and it gives us an opportunity to recognise the hard work, dedication and resilience of our farmers. Across the Witham constituency, farmers and agricultural businesses work tirelessly to produce high-quality food, manage our countryside and support the rural economy. Their contribution to our communities and our national food security must never be taken for granted.
Farming is not simply a job. It is a way of life that requires commitment throughout the year, often in difficult and unpredictable conditions. During harvest, farmers work long days to bring in their crops while managing rising costs, changing weather, workforce pressures and increasing regulation. Our farmers need a Government that understands rural life and backs British agriculture. Instead, Labour’s unwanted Family Farm Tax and Family Business Tax are creating uncertainty and threatening the future of farms and businesses that families have spent generations building. It is time for Andy Burnham to tell his Labour Government to scrap these damaging taxes and start standing up for the farmers, family businesses and rural communities that help feed our country and sustain our economy.
We must support domestic food production, protect productive farmland and ensure that environmental policies work with farmers, rather than imposing further burdens upon them. British farmers must not be undermined by lower-standard imports, and the public sector, supermarkets and consumers should continue to champion high-quality British produce. As harvest continues, I want to thank our farmers, farm workers and everyone involved in our local agricultural sector. Their work feeds our country, sustains our rural communities and protects the landscapes that make this part of Essex so special.
I will continue to stand up for our farmers and ensure their voices are heard.
