Priti Patel, Member of Parliament for Witham, visited David Watson Transport in Earls Colne to meet with company representatives and the Road Haulage Association to discuss the pressures facing the road transport and logistics sector. Following the recent Budget, David Watson Transport raised concerns about rising operational costs and the growing challenges affecting their workforce and long-term sustainability.
During the visit, Priti met with Managing Director Mark Watson from Watson Transport, and Ferdy Williams and Christopher Scott from the Road Haulage Association. The discussion focused on a range of national and local issues impacting the haulage industry, including driver welfare, freight crime, road infrastructure, skills shortages, environmental requirements, and the escalating costs placing significant strain on transport businesses.
Priti was also shown David Watson Transport’s specialist role in transporting the iconic Trafalgar Square Christmas tree to London, a national tradition and a task of high logistical complexity. She praised the company’s professionalism, planning, and skilled workforce in ensuring the tree is safely delivered each year, bringing festive cheer to millions across the country.
The Road Haulage Association highlighted several priorities for government, including the urgent need for more safe and secure lorry parking, investment in road maintenance and strategic infrastructure, reforms to skills and training, and measures to support the industry’s transition to cleaner vehicles. Concerns were also raised about the rising number of freight crime incidents and the financial pressures contributing to an increase in haulage business failures.
Priti Patel said:
“David Watson Transport is a shining example of the expertise and dedication within our local haulage sector. Their work delivering the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is a real source of pride for Essex, and it’s a perfect demonstration of the skill, planning and professionalism that this family-run business brings to every operation. I am committed to championing their concerns and supporting the industry to ensure businesses like this continue to thrive.”
