Labour’s plans to impose costly and unpopular local government reorganisation on Essex have been thrown into further chaos as the Secretary of State, Angela Rayner, announced today that the plans will be withdrawn and reviewed. The humiliating u-turn by the Secretary of State comes after she sought to impose these changes on Essex when she previously held this role in Government in 2024/25 before being sacked last year for tax-dodging and then reappointed by Prime Minister Andy Burnham in July.
Priti, who questioned the Secretary of State in the House of Commons about the costs of reorganisation and impact on frontline services and has objected to these plans and challenged them, said: “Labour has left local government in chaos with its shambolic handling of local government reorganisation. For the last two years they have played fast-and-loose with our democracy in Essex – from cancelling elections to ignoring local views – Labour is betraying our County. These plans have been flawed from the start and Conservatives have been campaigning hard against them. Today’s announcement that the current plans are being withdrawn and reviewed is welcome but Labour have created further uncertainty and have no plan to resolve the chaos and uncertainty they’ve created.”
