Witham MP Priti Patel has met with senior representatives from Network Rail for an update on the Liverpool Street Station redevelopment project.
Last year, Network Rail announced their plans to redevelop Liverpool Street, which is one of Britain’s busiest stations, in order to ensure the station is fit for purpose and can meet the ever growing numbers of passengers passing through it every day.
At present, the station connects over 100 million people a year within London and the southeast, a figure that is expected to grow to over 140 million passengers a year by 2050.
As part of the proposed plans, a number of measures to help ease the flow of passengers are planned, including an overall increase of the size of the concourse area to help ease congestion.
The initial scheme, submitted in 2023, received objections including from heritage sources, and in November 2024, Network Rail announced their consultation on new and revised plans that would deliver the improvements required in passenger experience, whilst protecting the historic and heritage significance of the site.
Priti said following the meeting with Network Rail:
“Given the importance of Liverpool Street for rail users traveling into London from stations along the Great Eastern Mainline, such as Hatfield Peverel, Witham, Kelvedon and Marks Tey, this project needs to focus first and foremost on passengers and improving the every day experience for those using the station.
Already London’s busiest station, and with passenger numbers expected to continue to grow, we need a redevelopment plan that will deliver the investment in infrastructure that is needed to unlock future economic growth and really improve transport connectivity between Essex and London.”
