Priti Patel, Member of Parliament for Witham, visited St Luke’s Church Primary School in Tiptree as part of her annual Get Witham Reading initiative, celebrating literacy, learning and the importance of reading in local schools.
Get Witham Reading is an annual programme launched by Priti Patel for schools across the Witham constituency to promote literacy, encourage children to enjoy books, and to promote a lifelong love of reading both inside and outside the classroom.
During the visit, Priti spent time with pupils and teachers, hearing more about the work being done at St Luke’s Church Primary School to support children’s reading and literacy skills. She also presented pupils with awards recognising their academic achievements, and presented students with Get Witham Reading certificates and bookmarks to celebrate students’ efforts during the campaign.
Priti Patel said:
“Get Witham Reading is about encouraging children to enjoy books, build their confidence and develop the literacy skills that will support them throughout their education and beyond.
“It was wonderful to visit St Luke’s Church Primary School and spend time with pupils and staff as part of this year’s initiative. Reading is one of the most important foundations for a child’s education, helping to inspire curiosity, imagination and a love of learning.
“I was pleased to see such a strong commitment to reading at St Luke’s and to celebrate the achievements of pupils by presenting certificates and bookmarks. I want to thank the pupils, teachers and school staff for taking part and for helping to make this year’s GetWitham Reading initiative such a success.”
