Priti Patel, Member of Parliament for Witham, has visited The Alma in Copford to meet with the pub’s new landlord Edward Beha and the Greene King team to discuss the future and investment for this well-loved local pub.
During the visit, Priti discussed with Edward and the Greene King team their plans for the pub, including their new menu, and their plans to expand the pub’s outdoor spaces.
Priti also met with representatives from Greene King and discussed the serious challenges facing the pub sector. Priti heard first-hand about the mounting pressures from Labour’s jobs tax, rising energy bills and sharp increases in business rates, which are placing significant strain on pubs working hard to remain viable while continuing to support local employment and community life.
Speaking after the visit, Priti said:
“Our local pubs sit at the heart of community life, and I was delighted to visit The Alma which is a historic pub in the lovely village of Copford. It was a pleasure to meet Edward, the new landlord and hear his plans for the pub.
It was worrying to hear just how tough conditions have become for publicans. Labour’s jobs tax, soaring energy costs and steep business rates increases add thousands of pounds to bills and are putting huge pressure on pubs. Only the Conservatives have a credible plan to support pubs, cut taxes and strengthen our high streets and businesses to deliver the jobs and growth our country needs.”
Priti continues to champion pubs and hospitality venues across the Witham constituency, working to ensure they receive the support they need to thrive and continue serving as the heart of their communities.
