Priti Patel, Member of Parliament for Witham, joined fellow MPs, local authority leaders, industry representatives, and key football stakeholders at the Houses of Parliament for A Celebration of Essex: Grassroots Football’s Social and Health Value on Tuesday 11th November. The event highlighted the power of grassroots football to strengthen communities, improve wellbeing, and support young people across the county.
The reception showcased the significant contribution made by volunteer-run clubs in Essex, with sector case studies demonstrating how football supports local residents through health, social, and educational benefits. MPs and Directors and staff from the Essex County FA welcomed representatives from governing bodies, charities, non-profit organisations, and the media.
The event celebrated football’s contribution across a wide range of areas, including social and health value, mental and physical wellbeing, youth leadership and employability, diversionary activities, education, facility investment, environmental sustainability, inclusion and disability football, female development, and community engagement across professional and non-league clubs.
Speaking at the event, Priti said:
“It is an enormous pleasure to attend this important celebration of grassroots football in Essex and to recognise the enormous value the game brings to our communities. Football inspires healthier lifestyles, builds confidence, and creates opportunities for young people across the county. The dedication of volunteers, coaches, and families is at the heart of this success, and I will continue to work with local and national partners to ensure that grassroots sport in Essex has the support it needs to thrive.”
The event reinforced the vital role grassroots football plays in supporting healthier, more connected communities across Essex, and highlighted opportunities for continued investment, collaboration, and growth across the sector.
