Labour's failed management of the economy could lead to huge rises in fuel duty in next Wednesday's budget (26 November 2025) as Labour Chancellor seeks to hike up taxes. During the Conservative governments between 2010 to 2024 fuel duty was cut and Priti was a strong campaigner calling for the reductions to help families and businesses save money.
Across Essex, thousands rely on their cars every day for work and family life, particularly in rural areas where public transport is limited. Key sectors such as haulage, logistics, and local courier services also depend on stable and affordable fuel costs to operate. A rise in fuel duty would come on top of the Labour Government’s decision to scrap the planned widening of the A12, a critical infrastructure project for Essex, further undermining investment, growth, and connectivity in the region.
Speaking about the issue, Priti said:
“Labour's plans to raid the pockets of motorists by whacking up fuel duty are a disgrace. Raising fuel duty would be yet another blow to hardworking people across Essex. Families, commuters, and small businesses depend on their vehicles every single day, and increasing their costs shows just how out of touch Labour are with rural and semi-rural communities like ours. When you add this to Labour’s decision to cancel the A12 widening scheme, it is clear that they are making choices which hurt working people and hold our county back. I will continue to oppose any move that makes life more difficult for motorists and local businesses.”
