Witham MP Priti Patel has welcomed the debate held by Essex County Council today (15 July 2025) on the Government’s disgraceful decision to cancel the A12 Widening Scheme. The decision was taken last week, buried within a wider statement on transport, by Labour’s Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander. The decision has enraged local businesses as it will damage economic growth and investment, and without the widening scheme, congestion will worsen and vital road safety and junction improvements will no longer happen.
Priti said:
“One week on since this disgraceful decision, councillors from across the County, businesses and local communities are in uproar with this betrayal by the Labour Government. The Labour Government has committed an act of economic self-harm by cancelling this scheme and have undermined billions of pounds of investment for our County, the creation of new jobs and the building of new homes. I will continue to fight for this scheme and hold this appalling Government to account for this dreadful decision.”
